The East Palestine
City School District is located in eastern Ohio, entirely
within Columbiana County. One privately owned pre-school, the
East Palestine Pre-school, and one federally funded pre-school,
East Palestine Head Start, operate within the city. The Head Start
program is administered by the Columbiana County Community Action
Agency.
The school district currently owns four buildings: the East Palestine
High School; the East Palestine Middle School; the East Palestine
Elementary School, and the Administration Building. These buildings
are located on West Grant Street and West North Avenue, in a campus
style setting. In May 1995, the citizens of the community approved
a bond issue to improve, renovate and build new facilities. Three
of the district's buildings were closed and sold. Captain Taggart
Elementary was sold to the City of East Palestine for $ 1.00 and
cement work around the new construction. Unity Elementary and
the East North Avenue Administration Building were sold at auction
to private bidders. The Elma Sutherin wing of the old middle school
was expanded, with 24 new classrooms, a music room, an art room,
a media center, a science lab, restrooms, elementary offices and
an elevator being added. That building now houses grades K-5.
A new middle school for grades 6-8 was built behind the former
high school gymnasium. That building also has a computer lab,
media center and cafeteria. The former high school gym became
the middle school gym. The high school has a new media center,
computer lab, music program facilities, a new gym and locker rooms.
The administrative offices moved to the old middle school and
the move to the new facilities was completed by all students in
January 1998. A new athletic facility, to house weight room, locker
rooms, and whirlpool was constructed in the summer of 1998.
The District passed a bond issue in 1999 to renovate the existing
buildings with the Ohio School Facilities Commision.

There are currently 1707 students enrolled in the district. The

of instruction and three principals. The district also employs
a transportation supervisor and a maintenance supervisor. The
district employs 98 professional -staff members and 32 full-time
and part-time non-teaching employees.
Support services are available locally and through the Columbiana
County Educational Service Center. County services include instructional
supervision for special education classes.
Teachers at all levels are supported by specialists in reading,
guidance, art, music, physical education and a certified school
nurse. Evaluation, special classes, tutoring, and out of district
placement are available to handicapped students. A gifted/talented
program is offered to students in grades 3-6. The schools have
installed a fiber optic two way interactive television network
(IDL) to provide a variety of educational options that otherwise
would be unavailable to our students. The program has been extended
to include Kent State and Youngstown State Universities. A full
range of extra-curricular programs and activities is available
to students, beginning in the middle school grades.
Sixty-five to seventy percent of our students attend some program
of further learning after high school graduation. There are several
public and private two year and four year colleges and universities
within commuting distance of East Palestine. Youngstown State
University is located approximately 20 miles from the district.
Kent State University branches (two year) are located in East
Liverpool and Salem. The many fine schools of Pittsburgh and Cleveland
are only 50 and 90 miles away, respectively. Mount Union College
(four year) is only 35 miles away in Alliance, Ohio, and Geneva
College (four year) is 20 miles from East Palestine in Beaver
Falls, Pennsylvania. The Community College of Beaver County (two
year) main campus is 18 miles away in Monaca, Pennsylvania. The
CCBC Avionics School, located in Chippewa Township, Pennsylvania,
is less than ten miles from East Palestine.
One local daily newspaper, the Morning Journal is printed by Buckeye
Publishing of Lisbon. The principal out-of-town newspaper is the
Vindicator

of eight TV stations and a large number of AM and FM radio stations.
